We're Different Shades & That's OK!

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, “I have a dream that my...children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character,” it’s important to emphasize the importance of acceptance and tolerance to your students. Engage your classroom in a conversation about kindness, compassion, and diversity. One meaningful way to discuss and celebrate the life of Dr. King is with a simple egg activity. Collect a few eggs of different shades—one white, one brown, one spotted—and show them to your students. Pass them around, explain that just because the eggs all look different from each other, it’s not okay to judge them or expect that one egg is better than another. You can then crack the eggs to show that it’s never nice to judge appearances because on the inside we’re all the same.
