Arctic Studies Art & Science Lessons

Teach a polar-perfect arctic unit this year. Help students discover the majestic wildlife and extreme conditions of the arctic climate with fun winter activities for the classroom. Host an art class for students to create their own unique snowflakes for a wintry classroom display. All you need are coffee filters and construction paper. Or experiment with the benefits of blubber—materials required include zip-top bags, shortening, and ice water. This activity lets students see how this fatty layer helps protect arctic animals from icy waters. New Year, New Non-Fiction Fun

It’s easier than you think to incorporate more non-fiction reading into your school day. The Common Core Standards emphasize a balance of both fiction and non-fiction, and research shows that practicing non-fiction reading comprehension helps students to not only build vocabulary, but important background knowledge, or a schema, as well. One way that Casey weaves non-fiction reading into her kindergarten classroom is by tying content into the season or by adding a fun theme. For example, in January she teaches a polar bear and penguin unit and presents students with research studies to prepare them for report writing. In February, her classroom celebrates Presidents’ Day with a fun unit about the famous symbols of the United States. She uses readers from Carson Dellosa, including Capital Building, Mount Rushmore, Golden Gate Bridge, Liberty Bell, and The Alamo. You can stock up in a click with the Visiting U.S. Symbols Readers Set. Refresher Course on Classroom Expectations

Break out the brand new crayons and sharpened pencils and welcome students back to the classroom after winter break. After a long holiday, you may realize you need to review classroom expectations and procedures. Skip the surprises, utilize a few practical tips and tricks for behavior management in the new year. Create and display visuals to remind students of the rules of the cafeteria, hallway, bathroom, etc. It’s important to personally model these procedures and to practice, practice, practice. Praise students for their positive behaviors and encourage those who might struggle at times. Another great idea is using Call and Response techniques. These are easy, fun ways to get the attention of your whole class, and quickly. Some examples include: Teacher says, “Class, class,” and students respond, “Yes, yes,” or teacher says, “All set?” and students respond, “You bet!”, or teacher says, “Hands-on top,” and students respond, “Everybody stop.” https://ift.tt/2EzBL6v support@endlesssupplies.biz (Endless Supplies .Biz) December 19, 2019 at 02:46PM

Pick a “Transitional” Song Playlist

Transitioning to the next classroom activity can drive you crazy. Students can wander away rather than get to where they are supposed to be in a timely manner. You don’t have to be a broken record—press play on “transitional” songs to signal students to be mindful of their time and to prepare for what’s next in their school day. Play a fun song for clean-up time, or alert the class that lunch is soon with a catchy jingle. Award points to the students that are ready in their correct places by the time the song ends and tally them up at a later date for an inspiring incentive. Birthday Brain Break Celebrations

Try a unique and fun way to spotlight special student occasions and give the rest of the class a nice break from the school day. The rules are simple: On their birthday, the birthday boy or girl gets to choose the day’s Brain Break. This is a great way to combine cupcake time with a fun game or puzzle, or free time. Students will look forward to this every day/week and spend time thinking about their ideas for other Brain Breaks.
